Appearance

About the size and shape of a small corgi. They come in 2 colours, mustard and pepper. They are rather sturdy and shaggy in appearance when not groomed. They have fluffy legs and a soft silky topknot and beard. Their head looks rather large for their body. One of their most endearing features are their large dark, round soulful eyes and wise expression.

History

One of the oldest breeds of terrier. Used originally for hunting vermin. Gained its rather quaint name from a character in the novel Guy Mannering, written by Sir Walter Scott.

Temperament

One of the most placid of the sporting terriers, they are not easily roused. They have a sense of humour and a big personality. They can be stubborn, especially if allowed to rule the roost. They are affectionate and loving and like to be with you. They respond well to training if done using rewards rather than scolding.

They are good car travellers, and generally friendly to all. They are known for their extraordinary deep bark and will bark to alert you of strangers.

Care / Grooming

The dandie does not shed, but being of shaggy appearance they do require regular brushing and when prepared for the show ring require considerable grooming and trimming. For the pet Dandie a good brush every few days is sufficient, combined with a professional trim about 4 times a year.

Regular trimming of the hair around the eyes is recommended to prevent eye irritations.

Health

In comparison to many pedigree breeds the dandie has relatively few inherited health issues and most of these are not of a acute nature.

Those that have been recorded in the breed include: glaucoma (which can be caused by eye injury), hypothyroidism & Cushings.

All dogs can contract back injuries especially if they live in houses with polished floors and steep stairs. The Dandie puppy is often long and uncoordinated and particular care needs to be taken during their early development.
