Appearance

A small dainty loveable dog, a flat face & a “surprised” expression. Black & white is the most popular colour they also red & white and sable.
Size can vary greatly in this breed, with some very small ones & some very large. Breed should be 4-7 pounds.

History

Called the aristocrat of the Oriental world, they were a highly prized pet of royalty. Famous for expression of astonishment, they originally came from China, being sent to Japan as a gift to the Empress. They are now seen all over the world.

Temperament

Sweet natured dogs that make great companion dogs. Love to be lap dogs where there are cuddled & get lots of attention. Small children are not advised to be with Chinnie pups as they are a very small breed & “break” easily if dropped or rough handled. They love being part of the family & bond well with both people & other animals.

Care / Grooming

Not a lot of grooming is needed but they do shed hair & when malting leave the house covered in “snowballs”!!! They do not mind grooming bathing as long as they are used to it from an early age. A weekly groom & bath keeps their coats in tip top condition.
Cleaning any folds around the eye daily to prevent tear staining.

They are not good in the heat & would not advise keeping a Chinnie outside in warm/hot weather. Cold weather does not seem to be a bother but heat stress can be a real worry for this breed.

Health

Chinnies are a very outgoing & healthy mob.

Check carefully that the parents are in good health & have a vet check & certify heart, patellas etc are sound, on the puppy prior to buying it. Try to meet the pups parents & see for yourself what sort of condition they are in & how well socialized the adults & pups are.

They are a Toy breed & have problems associated with being a small dog – patellas, heart defects, tracheal collapse etc. Vet check & parentage checks are very important to try to get a healthy pup.
