The Maremma Sheepdog

Appearance

Medium long coat which is usually all white. Drop triangular smallish ears. Eyes should be dark with black rims. Black pads and toenails. Skin should be dark.

History

A livestock guardian dog from Italy where they have been working for over 2,000 years. Used to protect the flocks from wolves and bears but now it is more the two legged variety.

Temperament

Socialization as a puppy is strongly recommended, after which the dog is a loving family member, as well as being able to do its job of guarding the livestock. Can be wary of strangers until properly introduced.

Care / Grooming

Coat will shed dirt and water but regular brushing is advisable. More attention is needed when the dog is shedding, especially under the ear flap and down the back legs and tail.

Health

Normally keeps good health. There are no known genetic conditions at this stage.
