Sturdy medium sized dog - well muscled - strong head - penetrating stare.
Fisherman's dog of Portugal. Bred to work on the fishing boats and help haul in the nets, retrieve gear fallen overboard, act as a "courier" between land and boat and boat to boat, also protected the crew against pirates and seals. Also used to herd stock at times of poor fishing or inclement weather. Traditionally clipped into the "Lion Trim" to protect the heart and lungs against thermal shock as they dove into the Atlantic Ocean. Clipped off completely (bar the tail "flag") at the beginning of summer to grow back for winter. The rear and face clipped to help with swimming and sight underwater. Paid in a portion of the day's catch - just like a crew member.
Brave, tireless worker, strong willed, loyal to owner.
Hypo allergenic, waterproof coat - wavy or curly. Most pets are clipped short every few months and a weekly comb through is suffice. The "show" trim (Lion) is longer and requires a brush through a few times a week and clipping and scissoring regularly according to need.
PRA, hip and elbow dysplasia, JDCM, Addisons Disease, Storage Disease, IBD. With many of these problems there is genetic and Specialist testing
