Details - We've just returned from a short break in Halls Gap and I was faced with a difficult decision - will I let on about this delightful cottage overlooking the Grampians? The temptation was to keep quiet about it and keep the secret to myself.

But, I decided it's such a great place for people with dogs to stay, that I'd share the secret with you.

The brick cottage is situated on a property that is just a couple of minutes drive from the centre of the Halls Gap township. It is period furnished and comfortably sleeps 4 people (one double bedroom and one with two single beds). It is fully self contained, the only cottage on the property and it has views of the Grampians. The owners are quite happy to have well behaved dogs both inside and outside. Despite it's convenient location it is very secluded and quiet, as well as having lots of land for dogs to run around (and lots of rabbits when we were there). As the cottage isn't located inside the National Park, your dogs can roam freely, although the fences and gates wouldn't keep them in if they wanted to wander further.

The cottage itself has all facilities - TV, fridge, full kitchen (unfortunately no microwave), an open fireplace, electric heater, portable air conditioner, fan, washing machine. All linen is provided. There is no carpet in the cottage, only polished boards, so having dogs inside is no problem. There were a few minor things that were inconvenient, for example they didn't provide soap so ensure you take your own, also the curtains/blinds on the windows didn't keep out the morning sun, so early starts are guaranteed. Also the front cottage-style garden was overgrown, as was the paddock, however, although the garden was overgrown it did have a couple of rosemary bushes which proved a bonus for cooking.

To be honest, I'm not sure how it would be in extremes of weather. I suspect it would be pretty cold in mid-winter (no heating in the bathroom either) and fairly hot in summer.

If you're like me and constantly on the lookout for dog friendly accommodation, you'd understand how difficult it is at times to get a reasonable standard. Why is it that dog friendly usually means lower standard accommodation? But I'd say that Grampians Farm Cottage is probably the best dog friendly accommodation we've found, and all-in-all we had a great holiday there.

Rating -   (Out of a possible 5 ... 5 being excellent)
