Details - $950 per week - prices vary according to length of stay and I believe there has also recently been a price increase. Ours was a 2 person studio.

We spent a week at this small group of secluded cottages at Horden Vale - on the fringe of the Otway Ranges in western Victoria. It's situated close to the Twelve Apostles, Cape Otway Lighthouse and a whole heap of other tourist attractions. So there's plenty to do, while you're still able to get away from it all if you want to.

The accommodation itself was excellent, but as you can see from the price we paid, it wasn't cheap! For peak holiday times there is no option to take the cottages for any less than a week - so although we just wanted to go at Easter, we had to pay the full week and so ended up taking a few extra days holiday - rather than pay for something we weren't going to use.

However this is dog friendly accommodation with style. We were in the Grasstrees Studio, which sleeps two people and has a spa bath. Everything you could think of was provided (including towels, bowls, blanket in front of the fire for the dog), a BBQ for each cottage, a fully equipped kitchen with all facilities, a wood fire (plenty of wood provided), a CD player, TV/video (the video was necessary as the TV reception was poor, so take a supply of videos with you). I was particularly impressed with the attention to detail - they provided the largest range of Twining's teas I've ever seen, plenty of tissues, toilet paper, spa foam, soap, coffee, etc. And it was the most well equipped kitchen I've ever seen in holiday accommodation.

The view from our cottage was through the gum trees to the west. So each evening you could have a spa and watch the sunset. It was so secluded that there were no window coverings in the bathroom, so you had a sense of being outdoors in the gum trees even while bathing.

We saw a couple of wallabies on the property, and there was plenty of bird life and also plenty of space for the dog to roam. The other cottages were quite a distance away, so there was no issue running into other people or dogs. The owners of the property have two yellow Labs and their acceptance of dogs is evident throughout. There were all sorts of "nice" touches to pamper both people and dogs.

In summary it was beautiful accommodation, in a secluded environment, with the facility to take your dog along to enjoy it all with you. I can highly recommend it, but it was certainly at the upper end of the price bracket.

Rating -   (Out of a possible 5 ... 5 being excellent)

Details - I stayed in one of the studio spa cottages approx 2 years ago now and vowed to go back after spending the most relaxing week of my life there. Unfortunately i am yet to return but in the mean time have stayed at approx 6 other self contained cottages throughout Victoria and i have to say there are only 2 downfalls, one - if you can call it a downfall, the driving time it takes to get there and 2 which is the most important is that the properties are not fenced.
The second reviewer was far too harsh i believe. The little touches were amazing and have yet to be given dog food, dog bones, mats and bowls for my 3 JRT in any other accommodation. The bread maker and special hints was wonderful, the spa over looking the bush was gorgeous (the sounds of mating koalas at night didn't impress the dogs at all but we got some great photos) and yes you do have to go ALL the way to Apollo Bay to get food or any extras (had you read the info on the website though and spoekn to the hosts you would have been told this) and god forbid you dont get any mobile reception....its a holiday, get over it. Again, to the second reviewer, how on earth do you expect the hosts to control the snakes???? We went over summer and although were very very cautious and anxious about snakes were lucky enpugh not to see any - but had we i know it would'nt have been something we could do anything about. As i said my 7 nights there were the most relaxing ever, points to remember, take lots of food, alcohol and dog shampoo (ours were rolling in the cows patts every day) and dont forget a book or two, your game of scrabble and a romantic video. I would give this a 6/5 if i could.

Details - Just arrived home yesterday 28 December 2001 and must agree that everything is so well thought out in this accommodation. We also loved the peace and the wildlife, sighting black wallabies, koalas, rabbits, blue tongue lizard and numerous birdlife. It is a home away from home but without the noise. I have to agree with the first reviewer who gave it 4/5. I would have preferred a microwave rather than a breadmaker and also would advise others that mobiles do not work there, you have to go 30k to Apollo Bay to get a reception. You also have to go there for the paper or food or whatever you forgot to bring.
Although if you really have to you can use the phone in the office which is approx 2k away. I was also wary of snakes and nearly had a fit when I saw my dog setting something in the grass just outside the front door. On closer inspection it was a blue tongue lizard but it did give me a minute or three of panic. Thank goodness he is a pointer and not a terrier. Apart from all that it was really great and would thoroughly recommend it. Charlie and Meredith really know how to make you feel at home and nothing is a trouble.

Details - We stayed in one of the spa cottages. Privacy and peacefulness is guaranteed, however, I felt that it was not value for money. We have stayed a quite a lot of pet friendly accommodation that provide breakfast baskets daily for less than the nightly rate being charged. I felt that recommendations were a little over rated. Cottage looked as if it could do with a good spring clean, couch and bed were uncomfortable, couldn't wait to get home to our own bed.
