Appearance
Japanese Spitz are a small, fluffy white dog with sharply pointed muzzles. They are often mistaken as small or miniature Samoyeds. They stand up to 14.5 inches for a male and up to 14 inches for a female, we say up to your kneecap, being well-muscled under their profuse coat. The coat is thick with a soft undercoat and a harsh top coat, females tend to have a softer coat, both coats feel like silk.
History
The Japanese Spitz is a blend of a few small spitz varieties which were kept as pets last century. Around the 1900's the white version had a popular following and the type was refined until it was recognized by the Japanese Kennel Club in the 1950's. Due to quarantine restrictions, most of Australia's dogs came from the United Kingdom and Sweded. They are now becoming very popular and are well sought after.
Temperament
Active, loyal and bright, Japanese Spitz make good companions for older people, excellent around children, excellent watch dogs. New owners need to be firm with their pups, although not harsh.
Care / Grooming
They need brushing at least three times a week, especially during their shedding season, after winter, or bitches just before or after their season, anything from 6 months of age, we do advise All pets be desexed
Health
A very sound dog medically, Luxating patellas have been found in some lines, and this can be aggravated by obesity, now due to the careful breeding and bringing in imported dogs and bitches this problem is not anywhere the problem it was.
