Anne (together with husband Bevan) founded Gentle-Bear Newfoundlands in 1983.
We had our first "Newfoundland experience" when we drove into a remote camping ground in the north of Sweden one day during the late summer of 1981. The caretaker's cottage sat at the top of a long flight of steps and a large brown Newfoundland sat "guarding" the door. We sat in the car for at least half an hour hoping someone would come out, when no-one appeared we finally plucked up the courage to walk up the stairs - when we got to the doorway the big brown dog just rolled over begging for a tummy tickle! He spent the rest of the day with us outside our cabin gambling through the forest like a big brown bear. We have imported seven Newfoundlands from Europe and one from Australia, used several other imports at stud and bred nineteen litters. We bred our first litter in 1986. Our association with the Newfoundland Breed began in 1983 with the purchase of our first Newfoundland, beautiful puppy NZ.Ch. Alpenlied Dark Raider, CDX "Khan" who won 2 Specialty BIS and was well known in the Canterbury area for his abilities in obedience, water work and carting. Khan is in the background of most of the litters and champions bred at Newfhaven.

In 1987 we purchased our first import NZ.Ch Planhaven Oceana Roll "Kara", she went on to produce one of our most successful bitches NZ.Ch Newfhaven Black Beauty (Alex), who took In Show at All Breeds Championship Shows, Speciality show and In Group awards and later went on, together with our second import in 1994 NZ.Ch. Waterbear Vic'Torious (Trampus) to breed our most successful Show dog NZ.Ch. Newfhaven TAS' Buffer.

Trampus's most prestigous achievements were Best of Group at NZ Nationals in 1999 and BIS Speciality.

NZ.Ch. Newfhaven TAS' Buffer epitomizes the Newfoundland breed excelling in water/draught work and being to date the only South Island bred Newf to take BIS at All Breeds Championship Show, 5 RBIS and numerous In Group awards.

We are currently successfully campaigning two of his offspring.

Over the past 27 years we have gained much pleasure in the litters we have bred and the friends made in the Newfy and Dog World.
