Our darling old man passed away on 25/1/2010, breaking my heart and taking the shattered pieces with him. He was 15 3/4 yrs old and I know that's a good innings, but it seemed to pass in the blink of an eye. Patrick was the canine love of my life and the blue-print on which I base my ideal character of the Golden Retriever. A big rap? Possibly, but I am yet to meet a dog that I have found to be as intelligent. A rich gold colour, with the classic look of the 'old' lines, Patrick in his hey-day was a dog with an extremely handsome face which graced the cover of a can of dog food for seven years! He could be arrogant and head-strong, and his intelligence meant that he thought for himself, thank you very much! Still, he was also an obedience trial winner with his C.D.X. title and a working animal actor, starring in various adds in television and in magazines. He was the first dog I worked with in the 'Responsible Pet Ownership Program Of Vic'. In his private time he was my best friend, and the truest one that I will ever have. He had a huge, inately kind heart. Sometimes the world of competitive dog showing can be hard, and fellow exhibitors can be cruel. Despite his handsomeness, Patrick wasn't a show dog, but I firmly believe that he had characteristics which were well worth trying to reproduce. I explain it in the following way- 'He wasn't a show dog, sadly that's true. But was he Golden? Oh yes, through and through.' And after owning and being owned by him, I know that I will persevere with my own vision of the breed, and I will own Goldens that descend from him for as long as I can. Patrick taught me that the saying really is true. Dogs make the best people.
