It wasn't till after I married and began searching for a new breed, something versatile that would fit in with whatever we were doing, that I found the dog in my dreams.
Hamish filled that niche and some 39 years later I still have Bearded Collies.
Hamish was a beautiful dog in all areas. A lovely, gentle temperament, he got along with all dogs and other animals, and loved everyone. He was a handy show dog too, winning classes in show, In Group, and sweepstake placings.
I started obedience training with Hamish and although it was a steep learning curve for me we managed to get our Novice title and started competing in Open obedience and dabbling in agility.
In January, 1990 Hamish suffered a spinal embolism, it left him semi paralysed in his left back leg. His prognosis was poor and I was devastated but we soldered on with physio and his neurosurgeon was astounded with his progress, we adapted to his handicap. We still enjoyed outings with the Beardie Club and continued our daily walks with the help of some strapping and a greyhound boot which I had modified.
Three and a half years later in November, 1993, we lost Hamish to tick paralysis after one of our walks. He fought hard to survive but unfortunately the tick had imbedded itself deep into his nasal cavity and took Veterinary staff more than two days to find.
Hamish was nine and a half years old.
