Mzalia have been involved with the basenjis for nearly 15 years. We strive to breed happy, healthy basenjis for the home or the show ring.

To date we have produced 15 Australian Champions, 1 International Champion, 1 Swedish Champion, 1 Norwegian Champion and finished one Grand Champion bred by John Forbes “Gr Ch Baagna Virst Legend”. We are equally as proud of our boys stud records both at Mzalia and away, with Ch Mzalia Texas Gunfighter being the sire of the first Grand Champion basenji in Tasmania.

For many years we have been fortunate enough to watch basenjis of our breeding do well in the show ring, not only for us, but for other people who have added a Mzalia kid to their life. With Basenjis in Australia and Europe we continue to breed dogs that are both suitable for the home and show ring, with an emphasis on maintaining dogs of sound mind and body.

All breeding stock are Fanconi DNA tested probably Clear, or are from parent who have tested probably Clear.

The last 30 years has been an exciting journey, going from a young handler to dedicated and experienced breeder.

I have been fortunate to make some wonderful friends and have been guided by some of the great names of the breed, both Lauris Hunt and John Forbes have both had a strong influence on my basenji life, and having spent so many school holidays at the home of Marie & Frank Dymock of Afrika Basenjis I have been so lucky to have had such amazing people to watch, listen and learn from. I will always be thankful to John for my beautiful girls Diva and Nulaa.

This year will see some exciting new additions to Zandeena with the arrival of 2 new imports, one from the USA and the other from my close friends Erik & Guido of Kennel Wanyika in Belgium. Both of my new girls come from successful show stock, but more importantly lines that can also boast a long tradition of exceptional temperaments.

With these new arrivals and of course the new friendships that have come with these girls, we are about to begin a new journey, one in which I hope to continue breeding wonderful basenjis that will be happy, healthy and loving family members that can also step into the showring and be worthy representatives of this truly wonderful and unique breed.

I got my first Basenji for my 12th birthday and have been in love with the breed ever since. I have been breeding since 1989 and in that time have bred many champions here and overseas including the first ever Aust Grand Champion -MBISS BIS Gr Ch Wazazi Trybal Image. I have breed many Aust champions including multi BIS and BISS winners here and abroad as well as 3 grand Champions. I currently have the top winning basenji in Italy being a multi BIG and res BIS winner in his first month in Italy.

I have breed champions in Finland, Sweden, Russia, New Zealand, Italy and many other countries.

This small kennel strives to get the best in temperaments, type and soundness and also for happy healthy family pets.

MBISS Ch Wazazi Awesome Beauty (Jazz) Owned by Nicky Craig was recently awarded her 2nd Best In Show at the NSW specialty 2009 under Canadian Mr R Meen. Her 1st BIS was under Breed Specialist Mr Jon Curby (U.S.A)in 2007. Jazz is also a RUBIS all breeds winner under N.Z Judges and more recently BIS all Breeds at Comboynne and BOB at 2010 Sydney Royal.

This year we plan to breed one litter from BISS Ch Kanibaru Del Diamante(Delta) to Wazazi Living On The Edge(Trip) this litter should be all red and whites and is due 12th June.

I was born in South Africa, and I immigrated to Australia in 1972 and I bought an Old English Sheepdog male, thus commencing my show career within Australia in 1973.The Basenji came the following year and was not really a show dog and it became very obvious that if I intended to stay in the breed I need a good bitch. At the time the Afrika lines [Mrs Marie Dymock] were very sound. I also liked the elegance and heads of the Pukkanut lines [Alan & Lauris Hunt]. As it so happened Marie had a litter from Ch Pukkanut Zypher and Ch Afrika Ambassador and I feel for one of the bitches and so became the proud owner of Ch Afrika April Showers who inturn became my foundation bitch. Over the years I bred to the Pukkanut and Janir lines and established my own line. The first major winner for me was Ch Baagna Erastus [Ch Afrika April Showers and Ch Pukkanut Wyvern], who was also the first of my breeding to get a Best in Show all breeds. His grandson Ch Baagna Hustler [a combination of the three kennels, Afrika, Pukkanut & Janir] became the back bone of my kennel and I lost him in 2000 at the age of 17 years and 4 months. I have bred under the "Baagna" prefix since 1975 and to date have breed in excess of 100 Basenji Champions, also having exported dogs to Europe, USA, & New Zealand. I commenced my Judging career in 1986 and received my All Breeds Judge licence in 2005, having judged in Europe, South Africa, UK and Asia.
