Appearance

A medium sized dog with a curly coat. Not to have curls is a fault. Being a great swimmer he has webbed feet, he comes in a variety of colours. Self coloured Off White, Brown, Orange and mixtures of Brown Roan, White/Brown and White/Orange. Having a wool coat and not dog hair he does not shed coat so he is suitable for asthmatics and people with breathing problems.

History

He is said to be the original water dog in Europe, he was a Duck Retriever then he was trained in truffle searching. There are paintings dating back to the 1600's in art galleries in Europe depicting a Lagotto with his master. In 1970 Italian breeders got together to keep records to save the breed. In 1988 the Italian Lagotto Club was formed and in 1991 the ENCI recognised the breed. After being bred all over Europe the FCI recognised him in 1993. The Lagotto is now bred and exhibited in most countries of the world. In 1997 Dr M Giles imported the first Lagottos into Australia. There are now 10 imported Lagottos from the top breeding kennels in Europe and more on the way. In Australia there have been over 300 puppies born to date. They are a very popular family dog.

Temperament

He is a very easy going dog, he loves everyone especially children. He is never aggressive and doesn't want to be king pin. He gets on with other males and he is a quiet dog. He is content to just lie at your feet. He does not require lots of excersize just a smart walk or run in the park.

Care / Grooming

The Lagotto is easy to groom, needs a bath once a week and a brush daily to keep him looking good. He is clippered once each year and scissored weekly to keep him looking smart, being a water dog he loves his bath.

Health

He is a very healthy dog with no big problems.
Hip Dysplasia is arount but responsible breeders have their breeding stock hip scored. There is a Cerebella Anomally found in puppies 6-8 weeks old. This has not to date been found in puppies ove 12 weeks and it does not recurr at a later date. The UK Lagotto club is researching this problem.
